5 Interviewing Mistakes To Avoid At All Cost

People love to hear an interesting conversation especially when the person talking is an expert in the niche of your listeners. The best way to give them the inside scoop on any topic they care about, is to make an interview!
However, there are a lot of things that can go wrong if a newbie interviewer starts asking questions. Interviewing is not as simple as to ask a question and get an answer.
Below, you can find the most common mistakes and how to avoid them.
1. No preparation for the interview.
Make sure to do extensive background research on your subject in order to ask the right questions. Background research includes answering yourself the 6 most important questions, which are: Who, What, Where, When, Why and How.
Also, try to find out what the previous media coverage was that your subject has received and try to get your hands on any bio sheets (if applicable).
2. Not crafting your questions carefully.
You whould list your questions in advance and make sure that they go hand in hand with each other, i.e. don’t jump from one topic to another and then back again. This stops the flow and makes it hard for your readers/listeners to follow the interview.
3. Not listening carefully.
Most newbie interviewers starting out often make the mistake of not really listening to the answer that the person gives. Instead, they just ask the next question on their list and move on.
However, if you truly listen to the answers, you’ll come up with more questions that will add depth and excitement to your interview and will make it truly unique to you.
4. Not Preparing your guest.
Your interview will be of higher quality when your guest is prepared as well. Before you start, be sure to inform him of the types of things that you want to discuss, which will make it easier for the person to be interviewed to give much more detailed answers. Don’t give them each question word-for-word because that will give your interview a “scripted tone”, just give them a basic overview.
5. Asking leading questions.
Make sure to take your opinion out of the question before you ask. For example, if you ask “Were you happy about xyz” you’ll either get a “Yes, I was happy.” or “No, I was not happy.”
But if you ask “How did you feel about xyz?” your answer will be better by far.
These were the most common mistakes every newbie interviewer does. Make sure to not do them and you’ll see success. Which success you might be asking?
Think of an interview as free, high-quality content. Content, that you could leverage in a hundred different ways.
